BarCamp Bangkok 2008 - Technical Presentation

BarCamp Bangkok 2008 is held on 30-31 Aug 08. Working as staff, I spend time to lecture some interesting topic. In this blog I present
How to give Technical Presentation?
Here are what I can conclude from the speaker.

• There are 2 kinds of presentation
• To getting something across
• To show off your knowledge
• We need to consider 4 factors to categorize what should we focus on presentation
• form, message, sender and receiver
• see picture below
• Good presentations
• Mingle and make small talk
• Tell story 60% of what u know, leave the rest in q&a section to make sure the audience understand
• Accentuate => make list of what you really want the audience to get across
• Rehearse => practice many times
• Have a backup plan => in case of technical problem
• Slide design
• One point
• Big fonts
• Empty space
• Visual theme
• Sometime it is a good idea to use a quote
• When use image don’t be afraid to bleed (part of image out of slide)
• Bad slide
• Use distracting background
• Small fonts hard to read
• Horrible clip art
• Have everything you wanna say written in because people will stop listening
• Getting technical
• Consider level of the audience
• Too many information is hard to understand, dumb down data to make it easier to understand
• Demonstrations => Perform this part only if it is 100% work

The Preparation

Before you start to complain about how suck your Vista are let's start today by doing these:
• Your computer meet Windows Vista system requirements
• I am not using what Microsoft told you (which is here) but set up my own spec in order to run Windows Vista well
CPU: 1.5 GHz and up
RAM: at least 2 GB
Graphic Card: DirectX9 supported with 128 MB of memory
High Speed Internet: to keep updating your Vista
• Upgrade to newest service pack (Currently Windows Vista SP1)
• I really say this helps a lot. My laptop rating went up after this upgrade.
• Remove unnecessary preinstalled softwares
• I can guarantee that most of the time you ain't gonna need them
• Update your device driver and bios
• Geek says "Of course, you idiot!"

The Beginning

After thinking about my blog topic for quite a time, I finally come out with this trendy idea,

"How to work around in Windows Vista?"

There are two reasons I choose this topic. The main reason is that I tired hearing people complain about their new Vista based laptop. I don't think they try hard enough to get used to this new OS. I also believe that they don't know the different between those two OS. The other reason is that since Microsoft already stop selling Windows XP, we need to use Vista very soon anyway. It is important to learn to become a Vista power user, isn't it?

Now, let's talk about my topic. There are many websites providing good Vista tips. I might write form choosing some of them which is interesting, but most of the time from my experience and experiment. Furthermore, this topic will focus on laptop coz that what I tested on.

p.s. I'm not Microsoft Lover, just try to make the use of it. If you don't believe me please reread my reason again.

Round-Trip flight vs One-Way flight

Have you ever buy something from the internet ? I believe some of you did. Let's go to more specific question. Have you ever book a flight online ? I did many times. Mostly, I book a ticket on Air-Asia website when there is a promotion. Something like 199 baht not inluding vat. My trip could cost less than travel by train if I am lucky. Anyway I did some research on BKK-RNO ticket fare last week and found an interesting price. I plan to go to Reno(RNO airport), Nevada USA this summer and on the way back I might stop at Japan for a couple days. First, I tried Round-Trip (no stop at Japan) China Airline and get the lowest price around 4xxxx baht and cost 25xxx baht only for one-way BKK-LAX. Then I choose North West Airline (NWA) because they normally stop at NRT airport Japan to change the plane. The price is almost 60000 baht for one-way RNO-NRT stop for 4 days then NRT-BKK. Surprisingly, if I choose round-trip from NWA I would have to pay only 52xxx baht for the whole flights. Futhermore, I even get 51xxx baht from United Airline. See it is not wise to book a one-way flight. Even if you don't know the exact depart date, you should book any day and push off later.

ps. according to a comment in last blog - no "Just" at the beginning this time hehehe

The Real Happy Feet

Just got the PES6 from New, my faculty's friend who, I think, interest in many same stuff like I. At first, I wouldn't get this version and will wait for the Winning Eleven 10. For people who don't know the different between Winning Eleven and Pro Evolution Soccer (PES), Konami originally use Winning Eleven as their soccer game's name. However when they expand their market into Europe and America, they use the PES name instead. Many people are curious about Konami's purpose. I don't know either. (What's the ***!) What I do know is that PES usually came first around a couple month before Winning is release. Both of version looked pretty much alike, but base on the previous version Winning seems to require less resources from your PC. Personally I think PES is the pre-final version of Winning Eleven. (and they still sell it! ) This is the reason why I rather wait for Winning Eleven.

Anyway, after I apply the patch to update almost everything in the game including the commentator sound, ad-board or soccer stuts, I tested PES6 for a couple hour and it seem to improve like every previous version. Of course, it's more realistic on the gameplay. Konami got the license from much more team because most of the players' name are displayed correct. However, I think the game looked slow than it use to be. Player are easier to lose the ball from the defender tackle. (hope not b'coz of my 3-year old laptop ) On the other hand, PES6 has secret thing where the gamestaff put their joke on. I love the way they do. It make me feel like playing FIFA (98 I think, the one that has Zico on the cover) where you see the alien kidnap your player. Here is the picture I capture from the game. Name it "Very Old Trafford" and "Real Happy Feet".
